Description
Clearing the Air is a 2 1/2 day classroom course discussing the major air quality programs; the responsibilities of, and interaction between, EPA and the state/local agencies; the roles of the various disciplines within the air quality program; and why and how we control emissions of concern. Group and classroom exercises will be used to emphasize key points and to encourage discussion among attendees. In addition, internet resources will be accessed and demonstrated.
Who Should Attend
Clearing the Air is aimed toward air quality staff of all disciplines with little or no experience, providing a generalized overview of the various air quality programs and the employee’s role in successful implementation of their state’s or local agency’s air quality program. Experienced staff will receive insight into some of the programs with which they may not be directly involved and by better understanding the roles of agency staff with which they don’t ordinarily work.
Leaning Objectives
Provide attendees with a basic understanding of the history and evolution of the current air quality programs, focusing on the 1970 federal Clean Air Act, and the 1977 and 1990 amendments to the federal Clean Air Act.

Introduce attendees to the basic elements and goals of the various air quality programs, including the National Ambient Air Quality Standards; New Source Performance Standards; National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants; Acid Deposition Control; Regional Haze; Stratospheric Ozone Protection; and Title V Operating Permits.

Introduce attendees to the disciplines involved, and the functions of each, in meeting the goals of the various air quality programs.

Introduce attendees to common sources of emissions the air quality program regulates and common methods of controlling those emissions.

Introduce attendees to the terminology and acronyms of the air quality program.

Attendees will also be made aware of technical resources available to explore most air quality issues, where to find those technical resources and how to use those resources. Students will be provided with electronic versions of select resource material.
